I hear this A LOT from clients when they are getting ready to have a difficult conversation or interview:
“I don’t want to say the wrong things.”
To which I ask them to define “wrong.”
Not one person ever has an answer.
They don’t have an answer because there’s no such thing. What I believe it means is that they are uncomfortable with the IDEA of the conversation/interview and target their fear to saying the “wrong thing.”
In their minds, saying the wrong thing will lead to catastrophe, which is why there is fear. The Catastrophic Thinking loop is where people get stuck.
Everyone has a few catastrophic fears, what are yours?
